July 16, 2016 – It’s Not All About the Traveling

Rainbow over Lake Coeur d' Alene
We enjoy our time on the road, encountering new things everyday is the most fun. But equally enjoyable is when we reach a stopping point where we can drop anchor and take a breather. Jim and Theresa have a boat-in-only cabin on Lake Coeur d’ Alene – our stopping point. A week with good friends and a washer and dryer!

We’ve spent close to whole summers at The Cabin so it’s like home and we try to help with the never-ending list of chores. Denis was really happy to help with the chore of shooting down a wasp nest in a tree by the cabin. It took 4 shots, each one on target, to totally disintegrate the nest. Fortunately the remaining wasps took off from the area. Check that one off the chore list!

One of the fun things to do at the cabin is kayak. While enjoying the lake view from the deck we had the epiphany that we should add kayaks to our traveling arsenal. A quick search of Craigslist found a nice set in Sacramento where we would be in a couple days. Arrangements made for pick-up and off we went to the local outfitter to get kayak holders for the top of Molly. Also shipped to us at our Idaho stop was bedding for Scoop’s bunks. With Laine and Angel joining us in Sac, I wanted our guests to be comfy. The bunks are small, not a standard size so of course the costs were higher. I topped them off with Restoration Hardware duvets which are a normal twin size. Stuffed into the bunks they puffed up so high the girls could barely get in. They are going to require some "down"-sizing when I get to a stop with a sewing machine.

As our family will attest, I am a planner. No family event is complete without Mom’s itinerary. A few Christmas’ back I decided to forego the ribbing about my scheduling and did not do the holiday vacation itinerary. The family was lost. By day two they begged me to plan their lives for them – I happily obliged. So, I had a plan for getting us from Coeur d’ Alene to Sacramento in time to pick up the waiting kayaks and make it to the Sac airport for Laine and Angel and THEN make it to our reserved campsite at Bodega Bay Dunes State Park. We hit the road for Sacramento early Saturday intending to get as far as possible. We didn’t think we would make it as far as Redding where Doodie (college roomie with college nickname) and Dave live. By early afternoon we knew we could make it, gave them a call. Doodie the ultimate planner was expecting our call  and saved us from the first boondocking experience.
